Primary Blog/Video Marketing/Use Natural Light Video for Authentic Shots

Estimated reading time: 4 min

You’re juggling a million tasks, like editing clips between emails and chasing clients, and still wondering why your videos look like they were shot in a cave? Does that sound familiar?

When your footage is dim or flat, viewers scroll past before they even notice your story. Fixing that pain point means brighter, more inviting videos that keep people watching, and coming back for more.

Step 1 – Find Your Natural Light Video Setup

  • Scout a simple spot near a window or door.
  • Look for soft, even light, and aim for indirect sun to avoid harsh shadows.
  • Position your subject so the light hits at a slight angle, not head-on.
  • Try shooting during early morning or late afternoon when the light is soft and flattering.
  • If your workspace has only overhead lights, temporarily block them to rely on sunlight alone.

Step 2 – Balance Exposure on Your Phone

  • Tap to focus on your subject in the camera app.
  • Slide the exposure slider up or down until the image looks bright but not blown out.
  • Lock focus and exposure if your phone allows so it won’t jump around mid-recording.
  • If your phone doesn’t lock exposure, gently hold focus by lightly pressing on screen.
  • Practice a quick test clip to double-check the brightness before you start shooting.

Step 3 – Master Natural Light Video Angles

  • Shoot with the light at roughly 45 degrees creates soft shadows and depth.
  • Avoid placing the sun directly behind your subject or camera.
  • Tilt your device up or down a little to see how shadows fall, and find the most flattering view.
  • Turn your subject slightly to face the light more fully for a softer look.
  • If you need a rim light effect, put a reflector (even a white poster board) opposite the window.

Step 4 – Use Simple Reflectors

  • Grab a white foam board or large piece of poster board.
  • Hold it on the side opposite the light source.
  • Angle it so light bounces back onto shadow areas.
  • A car sunshade or aluminum foil taped to cardboard works in a pinch.
  • Reflectors help you even out faces, reduce dark circles, and make colors pop.

Step 5 – Keep It Steady and Thoughtful

  • Use a simple tripod or lean against a wall to steady your shot.
  • Frame your shot so your subject has space to “look into” the frame.
  • Record short clips (20 to 30 seconds) so you can mix and match later.
  • If you’re free-handing your phone, tuck elbows into your body for stability.
  • Vary your framing with wide, medium, and close-up clips for storytelling flexibility.

Extra Tips for Advanced Readers:

  • DIY Diffusion: Drape a sheer white curtain or shower curtain over the window to soften intense midday sun.
  • Log vs. Standard Profile: If your phone or camera offers a log profile, switch to it for extra highlight and shadow detail. Just remember to color-grade later.
  • Timed Lighting Charts: Create a simple spreadsheet noting how light changes in your space hour by hour, then plan your shoots around the best windows.

Bonus Ideas to Level Up:

  • Golden Hour Socials: Schedule quick 5-minute shoots at dawn or dusk for that warm glow without extra gear.
  • Shadow Play: Use blinds or latticework to cast interesting patterns on your subject for creative storytelling.
  • Light Sandwich: Place a small LED behind your subject to create separation when background light falls off.

Cheers! Always Remember That SMILE!
